Mount Carmel Academy added another trophy to its ever growing list of state championships when its Math Olympiad team won 1st Place and 3rd Place in the finals held in Austin, Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009.
The MCA teams were among the final 28 teams from across the state of Texas who participated in the intense competion held in the State Capitol building. The two MCA teams were well prepared by their sponsor, Sr. Theresa Mai, upper math teacher at MCA. Joining her on the trip as co-sponsor was math and science teacher, Paul Roy. While each team was to consist of 5 students, Mount Carmel's second team placed third with a handicap: its fifth student had to miss the trip so that team competed with only 4 students and still took 3rd place. MCA student members of the teams were Coryn Wolf, Nicholas Martinez, Joe Young, Stephen Sombillo, Maggie Vargas, Jose Almaguer, Alex Nettles, Nicholas Wolforth and Lauren Young.
MCA will be participating in the TCAL Fine Arts and Academics state competitions in Spring 2012, covering Math, Science, Spelling, Writing, and Acting.
